The New York Yankees are 59-55 going into the middle of August. A 11.5 game separation stands between first place Tampa and last place New York. The only hope for the Yankees stands in a wild card berth, currently New York is 4.5 games out of the final slot.
If the season was to end today the Yankees would miss the playoff and finish just a half-game in front of last place in the AL East. New York last missed playoff baseball in 2016 and hasn’t finished in last since 1991.
Nothing is going well in Bronx-town, and it is crazy just how this season has gone, think about it:
Aaron Judge got off to a better start this season than how he did during his historic 2023 campaign, just to fall the IL for over a month | IKF becomes an outfielder | Franchy Cordero was considered one of the best players on the team for a week | Jimmy Cordero was suspended for rest of the season due to domestic violence | Anthony Volpe gets his swing fixed while eating a chicken parm dinner with Austin Wells, who was the Yankees’ AA catcher at the time | Domingo German gets in trouble for sticky substances, proceeds to throw the first perfect game several starts later, and then gets on the restricted list for the rest of 2023 due to alcohol abuse | Josh Donaldson had 8 hits with 6 of them being home runs while having a batting average below .210 | Billy McKinney and Jake Bauers are regulars in the lineup | Luis Severino has an ERA above 6.00 and Carlos Rodon has missed the majority of the season just to come mid-season, put up an ERA over 5.00 and fall back on the IL.
There is so much more to hit on, the 2023 Yankees are a story-book team, but that book would probably fall on the restricted list due to the graphic content that this pathetic team displays.
The 2023 Yankees have to be up there on the list of the worst Yankee teams in franchise history. That is a powerful statement considering they are above .500%, but when you look deeper into stats and rankings, the Yankees are not a north .500% team.
When you think of the worst Yankee teams W-L wise, of course 1989 and 1990 pops in your head, possibly 1966 too. New York isn't at that point of those teams, at least for now. Considering a World Series hopeful is now basically a last place team in both standings and team stat ranking, it does warrant a paper bag over the head.
