deGrom Gets 6K's As Mets Split Double Header

Updated: May 17, 2023

The New York Mets played a double header late yesterday afternoon into the night against the Atlanta Braves, this was the start of what is a four game series. The Mets came in leading the NL East as the Braves sat third in the standings, three games below the .500% win percentage mark.

For game one we saw Jacob deGrom (6-2) face off against Kyle Muller (0-0), deGrom came into this game with a 0.52 ERA, so far no pitcher this season has compared themselfs to DeGrom. Before the game each pitcher was checked for foreign substance, with that said Jacob deGrom became the first pitcher in MLB history to be checked under the new rules. deGrom was cleared and proceeded to pitch a one hitter through 5 innings, he would then be taken out with Seth Lugo replacing him. Double header games are only 7 innings instead of the regular 9 due to the Coronavirus to decrease the chances of illness. Seth Lugo went on to allow two earned runs and would be releaved by Edwin Diaz who would end up getting his 15th save of the 2021 season as the Mets win game one 4-2.

Game One Pitching Line

DeGrom - 5.0 IP - 1 H - 2 BB - 6 K - 0 R / W (7-2)

Muller - 4.0 IP - 1 H - 2 BB - 3 K - 1 R / L (0-1)

Diaz - 1.0 IP - 0 H - O BB - 1 K - 0 R / Sv (15)

Game two was a totally different game then the previous one played just several hours before. Going in the Mets were looking for a comanding lead on the series, looking to o up 2-0 as the Braves were just trying to get closer to .500. On the mound for New York to start was Jerad Eickhoff who played his first game since the 2019 season when he was on the Phillies. Starting for the Atlanta Braves was Ian Anderson who came into this game looking for his 5th win of the year.

For the game we saw the Braves put up one in the 5th and held the Mets to a big donut as the Atlanta Braves shutout the New York Mets to take game two of the double header to tie up the series with a 1-0 win. Despite shutting out the Mets we saw New York with more hits than the Braves, but poor base running was the demise of the season. Leaving the double header the Mets sit 37-30, 1st in the NLE as the Braves are back to three games below .500% as they sit 34-37, 3rd in the NLE.

Game Two Pitching Line

Anderson - 5.1 IP - 3 H - 1 BB - 5 K - 0 R / W (5-3)

Castro - 1.0 IP - 1 H - 0 BB - 0 K - 1 R / L (2-2)

Smith - 1.0 IP - 2 H - 0 BB - 0 K - 0 R / Sv (14)
