EMPIRE STATE OF LOSING: Tom Thibodeau Firing Is Looming

Updated: May 18, 2023

Tom Thibodeau is on thin ice in New York right now, or so it seems. The Knicks are 28-25, 7th in the Eastern Conference as they continue to go on very long hot and cold streaks.

Thibs is in his third season as the HC in New York, and he hasn’t done anything really special. In his first season the Knicks went to the playoffs in the COVID shortened season, it was their first time experiencing playoff basketball since the 2012-13 season. The Knicks were taken out in the first round by the Atlanta Hawks, but there was hope in the big apple amongst fans.

That hope was quickly diminished as the team failed to make the play-in tournament in 2021-22 with a 37-45 record. So far Thibs has brought New York to a 106-101 record, that is little difference to his record when he coached the Timberwolves for three seasons. Minnesota went 97-107 under Thibs before he was fired, the Knicks would then hire him a year later.

One of the most recent issue(s) with Thibs is that he benched Cam Reddish with no explanation and with the trade deadline looming, it is expected that Reddish will be shipped off. Thibs has handled the Knicks poorly, both offensively and defensively along with inconsistent rotation time to players and misuse of talent on a squad with one of the lowest average player age in the league.

Overall Thibs will most likely be fired if the Knicks miss playoff basketball, this is looking to be a very quick era in Knicks’ history that will be surrounded with question marks. The most surprising thing about all of this is that Thibodeau grew up a Knicks' fan, he is now public enemy #1 in New York.
