Very rarely do you see a player on both New York baseball teams during their career, though it does happen and overall isn’t a bad thing; still many fans of one side of the Bronx-Queens rivalry frown.
Stephen Tarpley along with teammate Tito Polo came to the Yankees as part of the Ivan Nova trade in August of 2016. While playing in Single-A and Double-AA ball, Tarpley combined for a 0.88 ERA and WHIP in 18 relief appearances.
On September 1st, 2018, the Yankees promoted Tarpley to the majors, where he pitched for a 3.00 ERA in 10 appearances. 2019 would mark a different stat line and story for southpaw pitcher. Appearing in 21 games, Tarpley would post a 6.93 ERA. He had more strikeouts (34) than innings pitched (24.2), but the inability to keep the WHIP down would be his downfall.
On January 11th, 2022, Tarpley was DFA’d by the New York Yankees.
After being DFA’d by the Miami Marlins, Stephen Tarpley would find his way on the New York Mets. His debut would be short lived, not even going 0.1 of an inning due to the inability to get a batter out while allowing 2 earned runs; His ERA would be marked as INF. A major league blunder would then lead to struggles in Triple-AAA. Tapley posted a 15.58 ERA in 9 appearances, leading to his eventual release.
Now 30-years-old, Tarpley now pitches for the Long Island Ducks.
