Kirby Yates is preparing to go into year 11 of his playing career in the majors. The soon-to-be 38-year-old got his start off with Tampa Bay, but it didn’t take long for him to end up wearing pinstripes.
Kirby Yates is a forgotten New York Yankee.
On November 25, 2015, the Rays traded Yates to the Cleveland Indians for cash considerations. Yates would then be DFA’d over the 2015/16 offseason. On January 8, 2016, the Indians traded Yates to the New York Yankees also in exchange for cash considerations.
Making the Yankees’ opening day roster, Yates would go on and make 41 relief appearances throughout the 2016 season, pitching in 41.1 innings towards a 5.23 ERA.
Yates also notched 50 strikeouts and would finish 11 games for the Yankees, though he never picked up a save.
Yates would be a one-and-done, finding himself to begin 2017 with the Angels after the Yankees sent him off on waivers.
