Is New York Still The Mecca Of Sports?

New York has not had a championship in over a decade when it comes to their sports teams which raises the question if New York is still the mecca of the sports world.

New York has a total of 10 years without a championship with the last one coming in 2012 for Super Bowl XLVI on February 5th when The New York Giants won 21-17 over the New England Patriots. The next Super Bowl will be on February 13th, 2022 which is a total of 10 years and 10 days or a total of 3,663 days later.

New York is home to a total of 14 professional teams across a total of 5 sports (NHL, NFL, NBA, MLS, MLB.) Overall the New York Yankees are the winningest New York team with a total of 10,503 wins, but they have not won a championship since the 2009 MLB World Series. The least winningest New York team is the still fairly new NYCFC of the MLS as they currently sport with 98 wins as of 10/12/21. When it comes to the win-loss-tie-overtime loss column (W-L-T-OTL) New York has a combined record of 28156-26210-1613-486 which is a .517wp% total.

The 10 championship-less years is not the longest time without a championship in the big apple, it is the second longest as the longest was a total of 16 years which was set back all the way in 1905 and spanned through 1921. With that said it is safe to say that these are historic times for New York sports due to a drought of this size (10 years) and from the looks of how all the teams are performing right now it can very well end soon with multiple teams that are playoff bound yearly. Those teams are the New York Islanders (NHL), New York Yankees (MLB) and the Buffalo Bills (NFL.) You can also add NYCFC to the list as they have been consistent, but overall it is unlikely they will win a championship within the next 2-3 years.

With Tampa Bay winning world championships in both hockey and football along with being World Series contenders and favorites many are considering Florida to be the new mecca of the sports world. Simply though that is just not true as New York will always be due to the amount of talent they have had and currently hold along with their truly iconic teams. Many athletes still to this day request trades or elect free agency just so they can play on a New York team for their respected sport, you will never see that with Tampa Bay. New York has been the mecca of sports since day one and it will always continue to be.
