It has been a very rough hill that Luis Severino has climbed over the past 6 seasons.
From missing the entire 2020 season due to injury to then dealing with multiple shorter IL stints since, many wondered if the 2023-24 offseason would be one that saw the ‘Rino announce retirement.
Instead he signed a one-year ‘prove it’ contract with the cross-town rival Mets.
Maybe a change of scenery is what was needed or maybe a team that believed in him was—or maybe both. Nevertheless Severino inked his name with the Mets and never looked back.
Severino has played in the most games and has pitched the most innings since 2018. Though his ERA has fluctuated from the mid 3’s to the low 4’s, we have seen the best baseball that Severino could produce.
Tonight capped off his revival story.
Severino stood on the mound for a full 9 innings against the Miami Marlins. He was everything close to perfect.
Now he may have missed out on a perfect game, but anyone could see that he was pitching to perfection.
Sevy fanned 8 while allowing 4 hits and a walk over the course of his 113 pitches. This marks his first complete game shutout since 2018, which was his only career one up till today.
Severino’s CGS is also the first time that a Mets pitcher went the full length since Jacob deGrom in April of 2021.
