According to baseball-reference.com, the New York Yankees sport a 0.1% chance of making the playoffs Tuesday morning. New York sits 6 games out of the final wild card spot. Seattle and Texas are both 6 games outfront and Toronto is a week’s worth of games ahead.
With 12 games left of the regular season, the odds of the Yankees making the playoffs are lower than my dad coming home with milk tonight.
Frankly, the 2023 Yankees have to be one of, if not the most disappointing team in their history. They are not the worst team in franchise history when it comes to the win-loss column, but they definitely stand a-top of the board when it comes to preseason expectations, remember: this team had the second-highest payroll in MLB history coming into spring training.
One of the most disappointing factors has been the baby bombers, they have been silent this season:
Anthony Volpe: 148 G, 154 SO, 106-for-502, .211 BA, .680 OPS
Oswaldo Cabrera: 103 G, 252 AB, 5 HR, .218 BA
Oswald Peraza: 42 G, -0.4 WAR, 28-for-136, .206 BA
Everson Pereira: 21 G, -0.6 WAR, .143 BA
*Austin Wells and Jasson Dominguez were not included due to playing less than 15 games at the making of this article.
Nevertheless I am excited for what’s to come in 2024, but we can all agree that the baby bombers need to do better next season. On the bright side (trust me there is one) they can only go up from here because they are already on the rock-bottom Mendoza Line.
