Non-Conference Struggles: New Haven's Sub .500% Record Out Of New England

The University of New Haven is undeniably one of the best, most consistent DII football programs on the east coast.

You could argue that the saying expires though once they face a non-conference opponent outside of New England.

A total of six states make up New England (ME, NH, VT, MA, CT and RI).

New Haven competes in the NE10 and hasn’t finished no worse than 4th over the past 14 years. A total of 11 teams have competed at various points or those full 14 years alongside UNH since 2010 in the NE10.

Those teams are: AIC, Bentley, Post, Assumption, Franklin Pierce, Pace, Saint. Anselm, SCSU, Merrimack, Stone Hill and LIU Post.

Overall, New Haven has posted a combined W-L of 87-21 against NE10 conference opponents since 2010. The Chargers own the sole spot of being the best team (record wise) in the NE10 during that span.

Nevertheless, the Chargers have also gone 9-16 since 2010, and 3-9 since 2017 when they face out-of-New England opponents. New Haven has been outscored 640-598 (-42) during that span.

Their three wins dating back to 2017 have come against Shaw (31-20), West Chester (35-28) along with Lincoln(Cali) (38-0).

The win against Lincoln in 2023 marked the first time New Haven defeated a non-New England team since that 2018 West Chester game.

New Haven is also 1-6 versus ranked non-New England teams. The 2024 Week 1 22-7 loss to No.11 ranked Slippery Rock added to that.

The one and only time New Haven beat a non-New England ranked team in the last 14 years came in a playoff game against No.6 ranked Kutztown, where the Chargers won, 44-37.
