NYCFC has won the 2021 MLS Cup in a thrilling penalty kick head to head against the Portland Timbers on Saturday. NYCFC led for almost the entire time, but a very late goal in the final 10 minutes by Portland sent the game into overtime as NYCFC and Portland were not able to score again in regulation. Overtime was a true neck to neck battle and neither side had a true advantage and kept the score tied 1-1, sending the team into penalties. Both teams were exhausted during the penalties, but NYCFC had some energy in their reserves as they won the shootout to win the MLS Cup. This is this the first MLS Cup win in franchise history for NYCFC in their six years on the field, this championship win also marks the first championship that New York has gotten since the Giants beat the Patriots on February 5th, 2012 in Super Bowl XLVI, overall it was a gap of 3,598 days between the championships. New York is once again the top city, at least in the MLS world.
