Ryan Newman was leading on the final lap of the Daytona 500, Ryan Blaney who was in second place at the time went down and Newman threw the block. Ryan Newman's car got lose and shot up the track about 1,200 feet away from the finish line and hit the wall going over 180mph. The force of the impact made the car go upside down, due to all the smoke driver Corey La'joie could not see and collided with the drivers side of Newman's car. The car was still in the air as it happened and threw the car up even more as it caught on fire.

Once the car stopped safety crews had to take Newman out of the car, he was then brought to Halifax Medical Center. It was later released Monday night that Newman was listed as 'serious' but with non-life-threatening injuries.
