Why is Brian Cashman in love with pitchers who have had Tommy John surgery?
On Thursday, the New York Yankees signed Cody Poteet to a 1-year/$750K contract, marking New York’s first Major League signing of the offseason.
Cody Poteet racked up 58.2 innings with the Marlins from 2021-2022, posting a 4.45 ERA and a 2-4 record. It is worthy to note though that Poteet went from a 4.99 ERA in 2021 to producing a 3.86 ERA in 2022 with just a 2.2 inning difference.
Poteet had Tommy John surgery in August of 2022, and spent the majority of 2023 recovering. The righty threw two scoreless innings with Kansas City’s Triple-AAA affiliate in his one and only appearance of 2023.
The 29-year-old is far away from the end of his prime and we have seen what Matt Blake could do with pitchers. If Poteet could be a sub 3.30 ERA as the Yanks’ setup man or being a long relief pitcher, then the $750K signing would be the cherry on top to a powerful season.
