Why This UFL MVP Should Make The Jets Rethink Their Jordan Travis Plan

The last year for Adrian Martinez has been a wild one.

The Kansas State product went undrafted in 2023, found himself at Detroit Lions camp just to be cut later on, which then led him to being signed by the UFL’s Birmingham Stallions where he then posted an MVP award-winning season, leading Birmingham to a championship and now he is back in the NFL contending for a backup role behind future hall of fame QB Aaron Rodgers.

Wow, that was a lot to type. Is it a run-on style sentence – probably, but it definitely shows the magnitude of what Martinez has done over the past year.

Adrian Martinez is currently competing for the New York Jets QB3 slot with Andrew Peasley.

Overall, age is not a factor between Martinez and Peasley as their birthdays are back-to-back.

Though Martinez has had more accomplishments and carries more experience than 2024 draftee Jordan Travis, both QBs are the same age at 24-years-old.

Right now Martinez isn’t just playing for a temporary roster spot; He is playing to be potentially New York’s set QB3.

Let me briefly explain why.

Jordan Travis suffered a gruesome fracture of his left leg and ankle, which ended his 11-0 season with Florida State.

Since the injury, Travis has already experienced three setbacks in his road to recovery. It is now being speculated that Travis may not even have the opportunity to play this season.

2024 was going to be a red shirt year for Travis anyways, with him being able to sit back and develop behind Rodgers. That’s the expected plan for at least the next two years, with Travis getting minimal playing time, almost like what the Jets did with their 2000 first-rounder Chad Pennington.

Travis’ setbacks have of course prevented him from playing in the preseason and overall keeping him away from properly training. Not to mention he is expected to be the next franchise guy for Gang Green, and already he is dealing with a severe injury that for some players could even be considered as career-ending.

So, it’s safe to say the Jets are at the QB roulette table once again.

Also, 40-year-old QB1 Aaron Rodgers said that he is in the “hardest” camp he’s ever been in nearly a decade. Rodgers turns 41 in December and is coming off of an achilles injury that he suffered 75 seconds into week one last season.

QB2 Tyrod Taylor is a frequent visitor to the IL. Overall, he is a great journeyman quarterback, he sadly just cannot stay healthy.

Frankly, all those reasons could make you believe two things: The Jets may very well have to use a third QB at some point this season, and Jordan Travis may never play a game as a Jet because of his injury.

Adrian Martinez, though young, brings pro football championship winning experience along with a MVP mentality.

The fact is, if the Jets cut Martinez, another team will sign him and it will happen fast.
