Why You Cannot Fully Blame Clay Holmes For Blowing Saves

Clay Holmes and my father have 1 thing in common: failure to show up at important times.

Holmes blew a save opportunity for the 10th time this season. Holmes is 26-for-36 in save opportunities so far on his 2024 topps card.

Despite his 10 blown saves, Holmes 26 saves is a career-high, besting his previous 2023 number of 24.

Nevertheless, Holmes' 10 blown saves is the most in a season by a Yankee since Dave Righetti's 13 in 1987.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Holmes is the closer for the remainder of the season, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he will be used in every save situation.

The Yankees could do what the Mets did to Edwin Diaz, and that’s to move him to regular non-save situations to find his consistency again.

Now, it’s not that Holmes is in a slump nor is he battling with any injury, he’s just frankly an inconsistent closer. Fans do need to remember though that Holmes was a starter/long relief arm for the Pirates prior to his trade to the Bronx.

Holmes had only recorded one career save before being dealt to the Yankees, and that was in the minors during the 2018 season.

New York made Holmes the closer as an in-house replacement for Aroldis Chapman.

Clay Holmes is a great pitcher altogether. He has not posted an ERA north of 2.90 since coming to New York in 2021.

Would I trust him closing a one score game in game 7 of the ALCS? HELL NO.

Also though at the same time I also hope the Yankees aren’t in that situation to begin with.
