It’s that time of the season Yankee fans! We are not even at opening day and already the New York Yankees are potentially dealing with a major injury.
Gerrit Cole went for an MRI Monday due to discomfort in his throwing elbow, which has contributed to slower recovery time between his Spring Training outings. Cole has only made one start and pitched a simulated game up to this point. Nonetheless having a hard time recovering from an outing where less than 50 pitches are thrown is concerning.
The MRI results are not expected to be released Monday or even Tuesday -- meanwhile the Yankees are seeking different opinions. Results and a game plan for Cole should come by mid-week,
The discomfort could easily be inflammation, but it is also in the Tommy John part of the arm which would shut Cole down for the entire season. No matter what the culprit is, most likely the Yank’s opening day frontman will begin 2024 on the IL.
Any absence more than a month would be a huge blow to the Bronx team, which already has a somewhat weak and already proven inconsistent starting rotation behind Cole.
