For 12 years Alex Rodriguez was a New York Yankee. Accompanied by Derek Jeter, A-Rod was one of the faces of the most famous sports team in the world.
A-Rod’s time in the Bronx saw 2 MVPs, 3 Silver Sluggers and 7 all-star nods along with a World Series in 2009. A .283 batting average with a .900 OPS in 1,509 games played with 351 home runs and accounting for 1,096 RBIs, makes Alex Rodriguez one of the best to ever wear the pinstriped uniform.
Despite all of those achievements and very impressive stat line, the No.13 jersey is still available for any player to wear, it was most recently worn late 2021-early 2022 by Joey Gallo.
While on WFAN-AM’s ‘Evan & Tiki,’ A-Rod was asked how he felt that his jersey hasn’t been retired by the Yankees. His response was: “Yeah, of course it bothers me. It’s less about bother, but of course it would be nice to be recognized in one of the coolest places to be in Yankee history, but that’s not my decision.”
Alex Rodriguez was suspended 211 games, which had him miss the majority of the 2013 season and all of 2014, due to him admitting to using banned Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs).
Many consider Rodriguez’s career to have an asterisk next to it due to his PED use. Now retired for almost a decade and the Yankees organization allowing other players to wear No.13, it seems that the jersey won’t be retired anytime soon.
